Using Hand Crafted Bespoke Brick Slips to Shape a Street-Level Facade

Jan 19, 2026

In the dense urban landscape of central London, buildings are experienced up close, with narrow streets and pedestrian movement bringing facades into close proximity. Facade design plays a vital role in shaping how architecture is perceived at street level, particularly at close range. Our project at Fetter Lane demonstrates how handmade bespoke brick slips can create a distinctive street-level identity and architectural details within a built-up urban environment.

Creative Brick Solutions worked with the broader project team, including the precast company Techrete, and we provided options for selecting a handmade solution by artist Maria Gasparian to supply these bespoke brick slips, supporting a facade designed to engage pedestrians and create a truly unique presence along London’s Fetter Lane. At the pedestrian level and above, this detailing adds depth, encouraging closer engagement with this unique building.

Using Handmade Bespoke Brick Slips for a Unique Design

From early in the design process, the street-level elevation was identified as an opportunity to use brickwork creatively. A range of brick slip approaches was explored before the final solution was agreed upon, allowing unique design elements to be tested in context.

The completed facade incorporates eight bespoke handmade motifs, designed by Fletcher Priest Architect and made in collaboration with artist Maria Gasparian. The artist brought these eight designs to life by hand, our team found the right solution for this project and managed the process. Maria made the brick slip, which was then sent for glazing.

Tailored Brick Slip Specification and Design

These unique brick slips were made through a 3D printed design, with a plaster mould which the clay was then pressed into. Our team at Creative Brick Solutions sourced the appropriate clay for this project and managed this small but complex supply chain.

By working with bespoke formats rather than standard solutions, the project team was able to achieve a level of detail and control that supports both the architectural ambition and, importantly, the buildability of this project.

Creative Brick Solutions assisted the project in ensuring that these unique facade elements were designed for buildability and that the installation could be completed in accordance with the project’s requirements.

Enhancing the Urban Experience Through Detail

What sets the Fetter Lane facade apart is its focus on the pedestrian experience. The use of bespoke handmade brick slips and motifs introduces individuality at the street level, contributing to the character of the wider central London streetscape. The motifs are also placed at higher levels around the building, so they can be seen through the windows of surrounding buildings. Rather than serving purely as background material, the brickwork in this project becomes an active architectural element, adding both interest and a unique texture to the public realm.
