Micklegate, York
The brick gives the new elevations warmth, texture and permanence, helping the contemporary building feel established within its surroundings. Combined with steeply pitched roofs and timber-framed elements to the principal elevation, the brickwork supports a design inspired by the medieval buildings that once characterised this part of Micklegate.
The arrangement of pitched roofs, brick elevations and timber detailing breaks down the overall scale of the project and reflects the varied roofscape and architectural rhythm found throughout this part of York. This was particularly important on a site where views from Micklegate itself and from the historic city walls formed part of the design considerations.
Through careful material selection and a design rooted in the character of its location, Micklegate combines new hospitality accommodation with a strong sense of place. The resulting development provides a contemporary addition to the street while respecting the architectural and historic qualities that make Micklegate one of York’s most distinctive city-centre locations.
